Activities in the Area

Dining in the Hudson Valley
We are surrounded by many wonderful restaurants, most notably the Culinary Institute of America. Dine in one of their four restaurants, enjoying the student-teaching experience, all the while guided by master chefs in the kitchen. We highly recommend making reservations at the restaurants well in advance.

Many of the talented graduates of the C.I.A. have remained in the area, much to our fortune! From a few miles away, to a short drive, you are sure to enjoy a wonderful culinary experience.

Minutes from Buttermilk Falls is the Ship Lantern Inn. The Ship has been open since 1926, and has maintained a high set of standards both in the front of house and back of house. Feast on an extensive menu featuring many table-side preparations such as Caesar Salad and Bananas Foster.

Another local favorite is The Raccoon Saloon. Known around the county as serving the best burgers (we think so!), they are a local landmark and serve excellent pub food. Enjoy a warm welcoming environment, while overlooking the Hudson River.

Visit New Paltz for a variety of restaurants. One of our favorites is Locust Tree. The Locust Tree is tucked away on historic Huguenot Street, where you can tour some of the oldest homes in America. Locust Tree changes their menu seasonally, and has a wonderful cozy atmosphere.

Beso is another local treasure, located in downtown New Paltz, with a hip environment and eclectic menu. Beso reminds many of our guests of a Manhattan bistro.

A little further away, but worth the trip, is High Falls and Stone Ridge. The Depuy Canal House has been open for over twenty years, and is considered a real "foodie’s" restaurant. Enjoy a wonderful dinner in one of their many rooms inside of this historic canal house.

Stone Ridge is just up the road, and home to The French Corner. The chef is from the country-side of France, and combines his classic recipes with local food products from the farms of the Hudson Valley.

Wineries
Be sure to visit our local wineries, including Benmarl Winery, the oldest vineyard in America. Benmarl offers breathtaking views of the Hudson Valley, along with a wonderful tour of their winemaking and tastings.

Also be sure to visit the Stoutridge Vineyard, new to Marlboro, also offers some great tastings, and is situated on old farming land.

Shopping
Buttermilk Falls is close to all types of shopping . We are only 35 minutes from the world-renowned Woodbury Common Premium Outlet Center.

If you prefer smaller boutique shopping, be sure to visit the small town atmosphere of New Paltz, Rhinebeck and Woodstock. You will find wonderful little shops featuring clothing, jewelry, and home furnishings.

Antiquing
The Hudson Valley is the home to some great antiquing, all within 1 hour of Buttermilk Falls Inn and Spa. Beacon and Cold Spring are within twenty minutes from the inn, and offer many different period styles of antique shopping. Rhinebeck and New Paltz have some great shops.
